How to Keep Legislators Accountable

The actions of legislators flow from their worldview, that is, their perspective on the world around them. Worldviews are never neutral but are developed over a lifetime through interactions with family, friends, church, school, work, media and other information sources.

Many people are surprised to learn that most aspects of their worldview can be traced to specific famous philosophers who promoted their philosophies to change the world in a way that most people would find objectionable, if they understood the details.

In North Dakota politics, unfortunately, most legislators are not aware of the worldviews that they promote with their votes.

Below is a simplified chart showing the three dominant worldviews in ND politics.

A careful study of these worldviews helps a person understand the big difference between conservative Christianity versus liberal humanism and liberal Marxism. Most North Dakotans are Christians and want traditional Christian values to be represented in the North Dakota Legislature.

But to have such values represented in the North Dakota Legislature, people need to vote for legislators who have a conservative Christian worldview. Barna Research reports that only 9% of Christians have such a worldview. Nehemiah Institute has a test which can be used to measure the worldview of a legislator.

Once in office, the best way to keep a conservative legislator accountable to a conservative view of the world is simple:

1. Ask the legislator for a brief report with references on how each of his or her legislative votes and efforts align with, advance or protect the conservative view of the world and its effect on freedom, number of regulations, and taxes. This could be as simple as a web-based table such as the following:

Issue
Worldview Promoted
Freedom would be
Regulations would be
Taxes would be

2. Learn more about what to expect from a genuine conservative by reading good books like Understanding the Times, then you will be able to validate the legislator's report on how each of his or her legislative votes and efforts align with, advance or protect the conservative view of the world with its effect on freedom, number of regulations, and taxation.

3. Correct his or her report like a school teacher based on if he or she was right or wrong in his application of the conservative worldview. If he or she scores below 90 percent on the efforts you examine, vote for a new legislator that does Understand the Times and encourage your friends to do the same.

"Practically no one is a 'communist' today. What happened? Fundamental attitudes don't disappear into thin air. People might die, but ideas rarely do, especially when the idea is one of only two major strains of political thought that excite the people, dominate the minds, and determine the affairs of man for centuries. It must count among the most amazing spectacles of history to be inundated with the rhetoric, theory, and practice of communism, and see not one communist around. We read and hear daily about class warfare, redistribution of wealth, the 'dispossessed' masses, the disadvantaged, universal health care, speech codes, sensitivity training, restrictions on parents' rights, school-to-work-the list goes on and on. The agenda is with us, the Party is not." Balint Vazsonyi, America's 30 Years War, p. 176, 7.
